I Have No Words

The Mets followed up their second walk-off-grand-slam loss this year by announcing Jose Reyes has a TORN HAMSTRING. Apparently it is a torn hamstring and a torn hamstring tendon. I don't know what to say about this. There really is so much to say and yet it's all so hard to put into words.

Whoever is still a Mets fan deserves a prize. And perhaps a free brain scan. There is definitely something wrong with us.

I have so much more to say but it will have to wait. I have homework to do.

Let's Go Mets!

Joe Smith Will Be Okay

Well, he should be. He had minor surgery on his knee today and if everything goes normally he will be ready for Spring Training in plenty of time. I guess I have Joe Smith senses because this morning on the bus he was all I could think about. Looking at his situation today, I guess it's good that he's on the Indians. He's been injured all year and the Mets medical staff has proven they cannot handle injuries. The Indians have handled everything he's gone through well. From the viral infection in Spring Training, to the shoulder issues in May, to his knee injury that ended his season. He's going to be okay, and I'll be looking forward to seeing him again in February.

Even though Joe is probably better off in Cleveland, this trade was a major loss for the Mets.

Somebody Did Their Job Tonight

Mike Pelfrey went 7 innings and gave up 3 runs, all in a shaky 5th inning. I'm proud of this performance. He did his job and the Mets had every chance to win this game. It was the last start of the season for Mikey P. and it was nice to see him finish such an up and down season on a high note. He had shown more flashes of his true, good stuff recently and it's a good sign. He promised there wouldn't be another disaster after what happened in Colorado and there wasn't another terrible start from him. There were times he wasn't what a #2 starter should be, but he was never the disaster he was in that game. And tonight he pitched a good game. And again, I am proud.

The Mets have 4 more games to make something positive happen. Mike Pelfrey did his job.

Sheesh, only 4 more games.

The One Where Robin Saves A Bunny

The Mets took the series from the Marlins because Pat Mische was amazing and Josh Thole called the amazing game. After the game, the Mets did their rookie hazing. Daniel Murphy was smart and stood in back to prevent everybody from figuring out what he was dressed up as. Lance Broadway was a nurse, Omir Santos was Robin (sans Batman), Tobi Stoner was a maid, the new trainer was a peacock, Bobby looked like Goldilocks, and Joshua was a Playboy Bunny. Josh is my favorite by far.

Bart Hubbach of the Post provided the first picture via twitter (I really have no idea as to why David joined the picture)

And Adam Rubin posts others on his blog:

I Get That They Need A Break And All...

In a week the Mets will be in the middle of their last series of the season. And a week from tomorrow at about 4:15, the Mets season will be over. For many people it will be a relief and a chance for the Mets to finally try to get back on track. But for me, it will be sad. Baseball season is the best time of the year, even when the Mets suck. And the offseason seems longer every year. And when the Mets spend their offseason doing next to nothing, there really is nothing to say. The playoffs will be okay, but it's awkward when you have to adopt a team for what most likely will be less than a month.

I try to enjoy other sports but baseball takes over and doesn't let me.

Football will take the headlines and SportsCenter will break down every touchdown and turnover. MLB Network will be interesting to see handle their first full offseason.

To get through the winter I might just need this to keep me warm. Just putting that out there if somebody wants to send me one.

Let's Go Mets!

He's Not Bad At All

Ever since Cory Sullivan has joined the Mets he has given me something to smile about. I can't recall him doing anything that has lead to a Mets loss, despite the majority of games ending in a loss. Last night he had the go-ahead 2 RBI hit in the ninth inning. And it was as a pinch hitter. Since the return of Carlos Beltran, Cory hasn't started many games. But when he was a starter, he provided many strong defensive plays in left field as well as getting hits when he needed to.

Yesterday I said I wanted Jeff Francoeur back on the Mets next year and I want him to be part of the future. I also want Cory Sullivan back next year. I know the Mets should look for a power bat in left field but Cory would definitely be somebody good to come off the bench. Cory has some of the best baseball senses I have ever seen and really is a winning player.

The Mets would be stupid not to bring him back next year.

"Oh oh oh how was I supposed to know..."

"...that you were oh oh over me I think that I should go..."

The Mets are lucky to have Jeff Francoeur. I have long since gotten over Ryan Church and am really enjoying everything that Jeff Francoeur brings to the team. Even when he isn't hitting as well as we know he can, he is smiling and bringing another level of intangibles to the club. If it were up to me, I would give him the rumored 3-year deal. Everyday he is happy and chatting with someone. Even the fans. And tonight, he was chatting with an umpire. I just don't want to lose a guy like him. Imagine how much fun he would be to watch when the Mets are winning.

David passed HoJo for the most games played at 3B for the Mets. I didn't get to see HoJo play so it's cool that I see the next generation of the Mets. I really can't imagine the Mets without David Wright. Maybe it's my irrational attachment to him, but it just won't seem like the Mets when he eventually leaves. Of course, that won't be for a very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very long time.

And right now I can't really focus on anything because I feel really bad for Jon Lester. I hope he'll be okay.

Yes, This Is An Actual Post

Thanks to the insanity that is school I haven't actually posted in over a week. Since then, the Mets have continued to lose and people have started to look towards what draft pick they should get, Grady Sizemore has had 2 surgeries and Joe Smith has been put on the disabled list.

But it's almost Rosh Hashanah and that means a weekend of little computer time for me. So, I will give you my favorite Jewish sports hotties.

I Have A Video

I can't seem to put the video in the post so I will just link to it. But make sure to see the face Bobby Parnell is making at the beginning because it is really cute.

And no, this video is not just cuteness of Bobby Parnell. It's the Mets Weekly video of off-the-field stuff from the week.

Yes, That Did Happen

This win goes to Howie Rose. He was calling the game with Tim Mccarver on FOX and he made the game watchable. Or at least, "listenable". It was nice having somebody who knows at least one of the teams. He made the game exciting when it was supposed to be exciting and interesting when it wasn't as exciting.

And then there was David Wright. He hadn't hit two home runs in a game since 2008. Perhaps it was the hitter friendly dimensions and wind of Citizen's Bank Park or maybe it was simply David finally being David. He hasn't had a big game for a long time. But I would consider going 3-for-5 with 2 home runs and 6 RBI a big game. He continues to hit for average and yes, he showed us he still can hit the ball out of the park.

As for Mike Pelfrey, he fit in with the rest of the Mets rotation this time around. In a short start he gave up 8 runs. The previous time through the rotation just about everybody was brilliant. This time, everybody has been flat-out terrible. It's as if they are taking on the persona of the top starter, which at this time, is Mike Pelfrey. One good start, one bad start is pretty much how he has gone all season.

Tomorrow will be a doubleheader with the first game at 1:05 on SNY and the second game as ESPN's Sunday Night baseball at 8:05. Four games, four networks weekend for the Mets.

Let's Go Mets!

My All Time Team

If I were to put together a Mets team based on players I like I don't think they would be very successful. But they would all be decent players and they all respect the game. So, I decided I would make a 25 man roster of my favorite players that have played for the Mets at some point in their career. Some of the players are currently on the Mets and haven't had a long career in the MLB, but I am not basing this team on success.

C- Jerry Grote
1B- Daniel Murphy
2B- Tim Teuful
3B- David Wright
SS- Jose Reyes
LF- Cliff Floyd
CF- Cory Sullivan
RF- Xavier Nady

SP- Mike Pelfrey
SP- Ron Darling
SP- John Maine
SP- Johan Santana
SP-Bobby Parnell

RP- Joe Smith
RP- Brian Stokes
RP- Billy Wagner
RP- Pedro Feliciano
RP- Chad Bradford

Bench: Josh Thole, Shawn Green, Jeff Francoeur, Damion Easley, Keith Hernandez, Mookie Wilson, Ryan Church

Those certainly aren't the best players the Mets have ever had. But they are the players I would root for.

That Could Explain The Absence

Apparently Joe Smith is injured. That makes me sad. I had been wondering what happened to him and finally I found out from the blog CastroTurf:

Joe Smith is hurt again. Smith, as you might have noticed, hasn't pitched since Aug. 29, because he injured his left knee. He's not exactly sure how he did it, but his best guess was that the injury occurred when he missed a step while walking down the stairs at home on the off day on Aug. 31. Smith tore his posterior cruciate ligament in the knee in 2005, and this injury might be related. He played catch today, hopes to do so again tomorrow and hopes to be ready to throw off a mound by the weekend. Smith has already battled a viral infection, a strained tendon in his right index finger and a strained rotator cuff this season. "It's been a great year," he said sarcastically.

This sucks. I feel bad for him. But it's good to know he would fit in on the Mets this year. This really is a freak injury.

I miss him =(

Where Did He Go???

Joe Smith hasn't pitched for the Indians since August 29. YES, OVER A WEEK AGO. His last time out he gave up a home run but he has been almost 100% reliable of late. And that of course means Eric Wedge freaks me out by not pitching him for an eternity. I haven't read anything about an injury or a demotion. It basically just means he is inexplicably hated by Eric Wedge.

So, if you are in Cleveland or wherever the Indians are currently playing, look out for Joe. And please tell me if you see him.

I miss you, Joe!

Why David Ditched The New Helmet

In today's Mets game David Wright went back to wearing his regular helmet. I don't have the exact quotes but he says he stopped wearing the helmet because it became a distraction. Some people might say he should stick to the safer helmet but I'm with David on this one.

If he is wearing the S100 helmet it becomes another distraction during his at-bats. Being distracted when 90+ MPH pitches are coming isn't a good thing. And while the S100 helmet does provide better protection for pitches to the head, the majority of pitches are going to be around the plate. So, he'd be wearing the bigger helmet uncomfortably to protect himself from a small percentage of pitches while he could be wearing the smaller helmet more comfortably to produce off of the majority of pitches.

I truly believe he is ditching it because he doesn't feel comfortable and not because of the looks and the ribbing from players, the media, and fans. Last night when he pinch-hit he used a double-flapped S100. He was trying an alternative and didn't like that one either. If he was really leaving the helmet because of the aesthetics I don't think he would've tried the double-flapped helmet last night. In the end, neither worked out.

If he is uncomfortable and distracted wearing the S100 with 90+ MPH pitches, I don't want him wearing it.

Let's Go Mets!

Congrats Josh!!

In Josh Thole's first Major League plate appearance he got a base hit on a 1-1 pitch. During Wilson Valdez' at bat he stole his first Major League base.

Also, in the eighth inning he got his first Major League double.

Congratulations Josh!!!

To Prepare You For Josh

Excuse an random typos in this post. I'm listening to 'I Still' by the Backstreet Boys and have found myself typing the lyrics instead of what I want to say.

I have found a couple of articles about Joshua Michael Thole since his call-up. Obviously I'm excited about his debut today. I find it cool that we are both learning catching at the same time. Even if they are VERY different points of learning. I like Josh because from all of everything I've read about him, he plays hard. He doesn't give up at-bats and doesn't worry about hitting home runs. He hits for average and grinds out at-bats, to keep battling with 2-strikes. His defense obviously needs some work but his caught-stealing percentage isn't bad, having it around 30%. But he can only improve with playing time and practice. He isn't going to fit into the starting lineup over night. Being a catcher obviously requires getting to know the pitching staff and the rest of the league.

There isn't really a lot we can take out of his debut today, but it'll still be fun to watch.

Let's Go Mets!

Oh Pelf

As we all probably know by now, Mike Pelfrey didn't do well in his start on Tuesday night. And he was mad at himself. He was madder than anybody else was. Mike has had a disappointing season, but so has everybody else. It's been an off year for the entire Mets organization. But Mike has been healthy all year. He is one of a few players not spend any time on the DL. It's been a frustrating year all around. Pelf is hard enough on himself and with the media being so hard on him, it makes it seem like Pelf will never be a good pitcher again. I believe he can get it together. It just seems like everybody is tougher on Pelf because he has been around all year and isn't producing, so that gives them the right to focus all the bad on him.

Now, about the Helmet:

All of the jokes about the Great Gazoo and Space Balls have been made. But I think I'll just stick to calling David 'the Helmet'. I'm 100% for getting all the protection humanly possible, but the Helmet looks ridiculous. Last night the Helmet had 2 ear-flaps and that made it look a bit better. But, it still looks like David has a spaceship on his head.

It was all worth it for the smiles I saw from David. I'm happy he's back.

Let's Go Mets! P.S. Don't miss Josh Thole's first start today!!! The game's at 3:10 and it's on SNY and MLB Network!!!
