This season has started slowly for Kai Gronauer. He has not really hit his offensive stride yet and it is already June. However, his past few games have been better and tonight was another good step for him.
Kai had two hits tonight which raised his batting average almost twenty points. He is also hitting .278 in his last ten games and has hit .280 against left-handers all season.
Earlier in the season he said he was happy with his defensive game but he was still looking for his offense. He has served as the backup catcher behind Juan Centeno all season for the B-Mets so it would obviously take a little longer for him to get on any type of offensive tear with limited playing time. Hopefully his last few games will help him find his stroke for the rest of the season and maybe even get him more playing time.
The B-Mets won 12-0 tonight which is a nice glimpse at their season. They got a great start from Darin Gorski, who has also been great this season behind Zack Wheeler. Matt den Dekker and Eric Campbell had a combined five hits tonight after Matt had five hits on his own yesterday and they have lead the offense this season.
I know Kai Gronauer is not a prospect on this Binghamton Mets team but he's one of the reasons I'm following. The team as a whole is pretty fun and seeing Kai improve just makes me like them that much more.
So if the Mets ever have another rough weekend (which they are bound to have during such a long season), look for the B-Mets and see what they're up to.

I Think It's A Cool Idea
The Mets have been celebrating their 50th anniversary by running contests through twitter, Facebook, and at Citi Field during games. Many of them have included once-in-a-lifetime experiences for fans such as watching BP from the field or participating in your own round of BP at the field.
Maybe it's because I haven't won a contest but I've been thinking about cool ideas for contests. I figured I'd share one.
The Mets could give 25 fans the chance to experience batting practice (or something else, I'm not an expert on contest ideas) with one Mets player. They could have fans submit a picture slideshow about why they are the biggest fan of a particular player. Fans could then vote on which fan would win for each player. The top vote-getters would get to meet their player and the second and third place vote-getters could get an autographed item from their player. I obviously don't know the costs and logistics of a contest like this but I think it would be beyond awesome if it actually happened.
Maybe there's a way we could spread the word?

Why Can't We Be Friends?
The Mets off-field story of the day has been about them reprinting tickets from Johan Santana's no-hitter. Understandably, some fans are irked by this move.
There is nothing wrong with wanting your ticket to be unique and valuable and special to you and only you. However, putting people down for not being at the game is utterly ridiculous. Nobody messed up by not going to the game on June 1, 2012. It was one game out of 162 (or 81 home games). There was no way to know Mets history would be made that night. It could have happened August 23, 1999 or May 18, 2006 or any other game day. The fans that go to a handful of games each season may not have chosen to spend that Friday night at Citi Field.
Each fan experienced the no-hitter their own way. The ones at the game were on the edge of their seat there. Others could have been on the edge of their couch or the edge of a seat at a restaurant or sitting anxiously in their car. There is no reason for anybody who was at the game to act superior to the fans that were not at the game. The fans at that game were luckier than ever to witness history that night.
I want to be able to enjoy the no-hitter with every Mets fan. I do not want to have to worry about being put down because I didn't happen to go to that game.

Invading History
I don't even know why I'm writing about this. I'm so against giving this guy attention yet here I am, doing just that.
In the happy pile of Mets celebrating the no-hitter there was one non-Met. He was some idiot fan that ran on the field and joined the fun. Now, in many of the pictures and almost any video of the celebration he's there. Some moron in a Gary Carter jersey being, well, moronic. What's worse, because he's in a Carter jersey the New York Post decides to take the angle of making him like an angel, a hero sent down to represent Kid.
No. Just no.
I do not care how big of a fan you are portrayed as or you think you are. If you actually ruin the images of history you don't deserve to be anywhere near the team. Lucky for us, this guy won't be. Running onto the field can get you banned from said venue forever. It will also get you quite the fine and a possible year in jail. A large price once you prove your fandom.
It is all deserved. There is no excuse for ruining this moment. Every other fan in the stadium controlled themselves and stayed in the stands. It is not as if he could have waited longer for this moment than anybody else or gone through more heartbreak with this team than anybody else. Being caught up in the moment is no excuse.

Books
When I think about it, I lose my breath. The Mets finally have a no-hitter. Johan Santana threw 134 pitches. Josh Thole called the pitches. Mike Baxter contributed an outstanding catch against the left field wall.
The best part is, it is all real. This is not some dream or movie or video game commercial. It really happened. Every fan has their own story of the night, whether they were lucky enough to be there or they enjoyed the game on TV or through the radio. Gary Cohen was pretty excited on SNY and somehow Howie Rose was even more enthusiastic on WFAN. No matter how you followed this game, it was special.
I sat curled in the same position on my couch with one hand holding my head up and the other fidgeting with whatever was around. I was supposed to take the garbage out after the fourth inning but kept pushing it off. I had to go to the bathroom since about the same time. But I didn't move until the end. At this point I'm not embarrassed to admit I had my Mets teddy bear on the couch with me. And my dad sitting on the adjacent couch. My Yankee-fan brother finally realized what was happening in the ninth inning and joined us. My mom wandered in and out of the room as she does when games get too stressful. I have to mention it was her birthday because this was a pretty cool gift from the Mets.
In all my exhaustion from going to prom yesterday I almost thought this would be a game I'd miss the end of. I'd go to bed early and have it on the radio as I fell asleep. Had there been a rain delay that probably would've happened. However, the rain was weak and didn't deter Johan Santana from making history.
Tonight was a night no Mets fan will ever forget.

Josh Thole and Mike Nickeas are once again the Mets catchers. It is the combination I would have gone with for more reasons than my attachment to the now backup catcher.

The Conflict
I wish I had been writing more recently. I wish there was a way for me to write how I feel about certain situations in the Mets world without my opinion being thrown away because of certain players I like. That is my conundrum.
As an aspiring journalist I know I should be writing based on facts, trying to be reasonable and disregarding any bias. As a Mets fan I know it is impossible for my writing to be unbiased. I know I can't simply put aside which players I am pulling for, which ones I have put way too much time and energy rooting for to just push to the side. As a human being I know that however much anyone tries to write unbiasedly it is truly an impossible task.
I want to say what I think about the Mets catchers but I won't. That is one topic I know I am too personally invested in to push my opinions on others. Of course, if anyone wants to know my thoughts that position can change.
There are other things I can write about. There are other things I will write about. I just have to wrap my head around the catcher situation first.

ASDFGHJKL
Basically my thoughts when Mike Nickeas hit that grand slam. There aren't really words to describe how awesome that was. Or how happy his teammates looked in the dugout as he was running the bases.
This team loves each other and nobody has been a bigger supporter during the success of others than Mike Nickeas. For once it was Mike that got the support. After the game he said it felt like a huge weight lifted off his shoulders and boy could anyone see that.
One pie in the face later and everyone can breathe easier.

Just What I Needed
It was only one hit and it was just in the first inning. But it drove in the first run of the game and probably took a huge weight off of Mike Nickeas's shoulders. I know I'm just a fan yet it took a huge weight off of my shoulders. I'm being selfish but I needed this game for my sanity.
As for Mike, on a night when four strikeouts required throws to first base it was nice to see him contribute on both sides of the plate. After the game he jokingly said catching the knuckleball will take years off his life. Yes, he was joking but boy did he look relieved during that interview. It was just refreshing to see him smiling after the game.
I think he needed this. And after seeing his reaction to his last at-bat last night, I'm glad his contribution came right away.
It is amazing how 24 hours can change an outlook.
