Tuesday Cannot Come Soon Enough

On Tuesday David Allen Wright is expected to come off the disabled list. It is also the day rosters expand. According to the Daily News, Josh Thole is expected to be called up as the first of the September call-ups.

This Made Me *Really* Happy

think I inspired somebody when I wrote about Joe Smith and his success but lack of credit. Because, yesterday I found this article about him. It basically says everything I said in different words. But I love it. Actually, I love him.

"It's Only A Flesh Wound!"

Johan is out for the season with elbow surgery.
Billy Wagner was traded to the Red Sox.

I don't think I have to say anything else. The Mets have the best disabled list in the history of Major League Baseball. And now they possibly have the worst starting rotation. Without Johan, their rotation is Mikey P., Figgy, B-Parnz, Ollie, and Tim Redding. There really is nothing to say to that.

Actually I just wanted a reason to post it.

We Are All Insane

Jeff Francoeur has a torn ligament in his left thumb and Johan Santana is missing his start tomorrow with left elbow discomfort.

I still worry about the players being healthy but now I'm worrying about more than that. Jeff Francoeur had never really been injured with the Braves and suffers a terrible injury once he joins the Mets. Johan Santana had never been injury prone with the Twins and now this elbow injury comes after his knee injury from last year. That's 2 substantial players with their first major league injuries with the Mets.

I might be crazy (well, all Mets fans are) but I'm starting to think about other players not wanting to come to Mets. Everybody of any importance has gotten injured so why would some other player want to add their name to that list? If the Mets as an organization can't show their medical staff can keep players healthy they will have serious issues signing anybody this offseason. With most teams, the medical staff wouldn't keep players away. But with the Mets, they just might.

Venting Machine

I blame today's loss on Poo Poo Perez. But to be honest, I don't want to blame it on him. If the Mets had the luck of any other team in Major League Baseball they would have won this game. Jeff Francoeur would have gotten a hit and he wouldn't have been the last batter of the game. The Mets would have come back to win this one. But they are the Mets. And for some reason nobody knows, they have no luck at all.

I'm not saying Oliver Perez giving up 6 runs in 2/3 of an inning is unlucky. That's the way he is. But any team that loses every single core player has bad luck. Any team that loses a game on a triple play has bad luck. Any team can lose a game on a wild pitch or hit batter. Any center fielder can trip on the outfield grass and misplay a fly ball. A second baseman can drop a pop-up and ruin a closer. I could go on with players missing third base trying to score, but only the Mets have all of this happen to them. And have all of this happen in one season.

The Mets are cursed.

The Mets have bad luck.

No matter how you say it, the meaning is the same.

And whatever some Mets fan or player did many years ago to put the baseball gods so against the Mets is probably sorry. The Mets were the ones who had the shard of a bat thrown at their top player. The Mets are the ones humbled by their recent end of season collapses. They have never had a no-hitter, but so many of their former players do. They are the ones putting a team on the field filled with minor leaguers and backups. So, whatever was done should really be forgiven.

The Mets, without a shadow of a doubt, have the most battered and bruised fanbase. And yet, they still have a fanbase.

He Is The Forgotten Man

This post has nothing to do with the Mets. I'm just hoping someone in Cleveland sees it gives him some credit.

Maybe it's his name. I really don't know. But Joe Smith has gotten comfortable in the Indians bullpen and doesn't get any recognition for it. I've read stuff on Tony Sipp's comeback from surgery and Kerry Wood's inconsistency. But since his June return from the disabled list Joe Smith has been pretty consistent.

Today, his ERA is 3.34. On April 28, before his DL stint, it was 7.11. For the entire month of May, Joe was on the DL with shoulder soreness. Since his return, he has only given up earned runs in 4 appearances. That spans from June all the way to last night, when he pitched another perfect inning. That's 27 appearances and 26 innings with a 2.42 ERA.

And by the way, he has been facing both righties and lefties.

He got off to a slow start due to almost no Spring Training thanks to a viral infection. Therefore, April was his Spring Training but at the pace of the regular season. He missed a month with an injury but has come back stronger than ever.

And to relate this to the Mets, most people hate Omar for trading Endy Chavez in the JJ Putz trade. But he also gave up Joe Smith. And Sean Green hasn't proved he's better than Joe, who would have definitely been a part of the Mets bullpen this year. It really was a downgrade to the bullpen.

Maybe now somebody paying any attention to the Indians will see this and realize how lucky they are. They have had a poor season but their bullpen, at least one member, hasn't been the reason for it.

I Listened To Their One Good Inning

I have returned! Not from vacation, I'm still in Massachusetts.

I followed the Mets game on my phone yesterday until they were down by way too many runs. The day before that I listened to the 8-run inning on the radio while on the way to mini-golf. But surprisingly (actually, not really) the 2 innings of 8-runs in the past 2 games isn't the most interesting thing that has happened while I have been gone.

I am a little bit sad about the release of Livan Hernandez. He was always really fan-friendly but his ineffectiveness on the mound killed every reason to keep him. And that means B-Wags is back. Haha, B-Wags.

And there seems to be something weird going on with Gary Sheffield. He was scratched from tonight's lineup even though he is perfectly healthy. And he can't be traded because the Mets already pulled him back from waivers. So, basically, he can only be released. But that would be just odd and pointless. With that, I am going to stop starting sentences with conjunctions.

I Really Don't Know What To Say

If you're reading this blog you have probably already read other Mets blogs.

And I have nothing new to say. I just want David to be okay.

B-Parnz To The Rescue

Well, I hope. His pitch count tonight will be up to around 80-85 pitches. And I'm guessing it will keep going up until he is a full-blown starter again.

Last time he had some long at bats and on a limit of about 60 pitches he didn't get through the 3rd inning. I think he will be more comfortable tonight. He has gotten through with his first big league start and he needed a chance to get back to the routine of being a starter. This time he will be pitching at home, as opposed to starting all the way across the country. He's had a chance to relax with the off-day yesterday and should be able to take the mound feeling comfortable tonight.

I'm really excited to see how Bobby pitches tonight. His last start didn't show much but if he can pitch a few more innings than last night, we could see the real Bobby Parnell starting pitcher.

Mark Shapiro Better Not Screw This Up

According to the Daily News the Mets will be going to Cleveland in 2010. *explosion of excitement*

If Joe Smith isn't on the Indians next year, this won't be as happy. But for now I can't wait!

On The Outside Looking In

For the past 2 years the Marlins have ruined the Mets hopes of going to the playoffs. This year the Mets could be the spoilers. The Mets have 8 more games against the Phillies this year, 9 more against the Marlins as well as the Braves. Even though the Mets won't be in the playoff picture they can certainly affect it. Despite the fact that the Marlins screwed the Mets recently I would be the least upset if they won the division. The Mets played well against the Astros and Rockies. Next they have a series against the Giants, another good team. I like the idea of the Mets doing something that has to do with the playoffs. Even if it means being one of the teams I hated so much for the past couple of years.

Who Woulda Thunk It?

Billy Wagner is scheduled to come back on Sunday. He's coming back before Jose Reyes, Carlos Delgado, Carlos Beltran, John Maine, and so many others. Billy Wagner had Tommy John surgery last year and it wasn't even known if he would pitch at all this year. Jose Reyes was supposed to sit out for a day in San Francisco. Carlos Delgado went down in the same series. Beltran was going to sit for a few days and then return to action. And I don't even remember anything about John Maine.

But Billy Wagner proved he wanted to be back the most. He said last year that he would return. And he's returning. I'm looking forward to it because I know he wants to play baseball. Billy Wagner wants to prove he can still pitch and therefore he will play his heart out the rest of the season. At least one Met will be playing hard.

Feel Better David!!!!!

According to a tweet from Bart Hubbach of the New York Post David Wright is sick and could miss tomorrow's game as well.

I really just want David to feel better and get back to baseball.

"I Don't Do Sadness, Not Even A Little Bit"

David Wright is getting the night off. That's when I start thinking for reasons to watch the Mets games. It just doesn't seem right watching something else when there is a game on. I don't even know what to write about them anymore. Their baseball has become boring. I try to pay attention to other teams with players I like, but I'm still a Mets fan. And I just want them to play one game of good, crisp baseball. This team isn't able to do that. Even when they win somebody has made a misplay in the field or gone 0-for-4 with 2 strikeouts. I really just want a fresh start.

The Mets have thrown their fans around. Make the front office look like fools and the fans fools for rooting for their product. And we keep coming back to the product. The fans refuse to give up on the Mets. I guess we're stubborn. We won't leave this team for anything. There have been so many reasons to pack it up and gear up for football, but my heart is with baseball. And I'll watch whatever disaster the Mets put on the field.

I'm glad the Mets shaved because there is such a slim chance of them reaching .500 any time soon they would all end up looking like Tim Redding. But apparently B-Parnz had other reasons to shave as well:

“When you start to look bad, it’s time to do it,” Parnell said. “My girlfriend and my parents were riding me pretty hard about it. It just got too long and too itchy.”

I Have Made An Amazing Discovery

Yesterday I found out Picasa can make collages of any pictures. So, I know have collages of Josh Thole, Mike Nickeas, Mike Pelfrey, Joe Smith, and Xavier Nady. I tried to make a David Wright collage but there were too many pictures and my brain almost exploded. Currently my desktop background is my Josh Thole collage.

The quality is a lot better on my computer. It just didn't upload well.

This Will Make You Laugh

Chris Hayes is a Royals pitching prospect and he has an amazingly funny blog. Even after the Mets game last night, this blog made me laugh. And I have read the first post countless times and I still crack up.

Josh Thole Watch [part 1]

Ooooohhhhh, that sounds like fun, watching Josh Thole.

I'm going to have random updates on Josh Thole as the rest of the season moves on. Partly because the Mets season is over and mostly because Josh Thole is really gorgeous.

This season Josh has been working on the transition from 1B to catcher. He has also majorly improved his offense and is regularly batting 3rd for the B-Mets. He is batting .342 with only 1 home run but 40 RBI. He has also stolen 6 bases this season while playing in 84 games. He has been in somewhat of a slump lately, taking 0-fers in 2 of his last 3 games.

Josh will probably be in the lineup tonight against Reading.

Jerry Just Went Off The Ledge and The Mets Rotation Just Got Hotter

Jerry Manuel announced he is moving Robert Allen Parnell to the starting rotation and he will take the start emptied by Michael Alan Pelfrey's absence on Saturday. Mike will be moved to Monday's start against the D-backs.

This is going to be quite interesting to see Bobby's transition in the regular season. It is similar to what the Indians are doing to Justin Masterson. I just don't see this as a good idea. I know Bobby has previously been a starter but he only has 2 pitches and has been one of the only trusted members of the bullpen. The Mets will keep his pitch count between 60-75 pitches on Saturday. This move seems screwy to me at this point. I am kinda scared and kinda excited to see how this will pan out.

There goes his 1.000 batting average.

I'm A Big Fan, Too

This is a good piece on Brad Ausmus. And I probably wouldn't be a fan of him if he wasn't Jewish.

“I wasn’t raised with the Jewish religion, so in that sense I don’t really have much feeling toward it,” he said. “However, in the last 10 or so years, I have had quite a few young Jewish boys who will tell me that I am their favorite player or they love watching me play or they feel like baseball is a good fit for them because it worked for me or it worked for Shawn Green or other Jewish players at the major league level.

“It has been a sense of pride. If you can have a positive impact on a kid, I’m all for it.”

I miss having Shawn Green on the Mets. They had 3 Jewish players in 2007 and now they have none. Maybe they could sign John Grabow in the offseason.

In The Bizarro World That Is The Mets

This game was majorly weird the whole time. David Wright hit a home run at Citi Field in the 1st inning to get things started. In the 2nd inning things started to look more like the Mets of 2009. Jon Niese went to cover first on a grounder fielded by Murphy and was covering first on the throw for the DP attempt from Angel Berroa. Niese had to do almost a full split to catch Berroa's throw and came off the base as the runner was safe. He got up slowly as Manuel, Warthen, and the trainer came out. He took a warm-up throw and crumbled to the ground when landing on his right leg. He had to be helped off the field by both trainers and got an MRI. Jerry said he thinks it is a hamstring tear. More bad news for the Mets.

Now back to the game. Nelson Figueroa came in to pitch. He did his best Oliver Perez impersonation by pitching 4 2/3 scoreless innings after his terrible start on Monday. He also did his best Angel Pagan impersonation by getting a 2 RBI triple in his only at-bat. After Nellie, B-Parnz pitched the final 3 innings. He only gave up 1 hit and earned his first career save. In the 8th inning Jerry gave Bobby a chance to bat and he took advantage by getting a single. B-Parnz gets 2 baseballs. 1st MLB hit, and 1st MLB save.

Other oddities:

The Mets didn't give up any runs

The Mets hit two Cardinal's batters with pitches, including Albert Pujols. And, there was a pitch that came way up and in to David Wright. It was like a centimeter away from hitting him in the head. It was scary and Jeff Francoeur hated the way the Cardinals retaliated.

BTW, Gary Sheffield aggravated his hamstring injury and left the game after getting a single.

I Took The Day Off Just Like The Mets

I probably would've posted yesterday had the Mets made a trade. But they didn't make the smallest of moves, so I didn't make the shortest of posts. I'm not saying the Mets should've traded the farm for somebody, but it would have been nice if they got another lefty for the bullpen. Before long, Pedro Feliciano isn't going to have a left arm. Anybody with a left arm would've helped. Even tattoo-infested Scott Downs. But yet again Omar is counting on the players to come off the DL and immediately perform. In this case, Billy Wagner.

The old Mets have been back for the past 2 games. And I knew it when Thursday's game two loss felt worse than it should have, coming off a five game winning streak. Right away they have a two game losing streak.

Inconsistent.
